Leader in Training Program
Building Tomorrow's Leaders Today!
While still taking part in typical camper experiences (attending activities and participating in camp events), the LITs have unique opportunities and responsibilities separate from the rest of the camp. LITs will have the chance to lead an all camp activity and assist younger campers on registration days. Each year, the LIT group has completed a service project on camp property. Projects in the past have included canned food drives and a Hoops for Healing basketball event to benefit research at Children’s Hospital and a clothing drive for Matthew 25 Ministries. The service project is designed and completed by the group and few limitations are set as for what can be accomplished.
In order to gain the most from this program, we work closely with Kids First Senior Staff and camp staff. Participation is this program will help teens feel confident in the knowledge, experience and leadership skills needed to apply for a position working with children and be more confident decision makers and leaders within our community. Participants meet and are mentored by camp counselors and Kids First staff. Unlike counselors, however, LIT's are always supervised by staff when working with campers.
2020 LIT Program Details
As part of the LIT camp, we strive to provide the teens with some team field trips in addition to the Camp-A-Palooza field trip each week that they will be assisting on. The cost of these field trips are factored into the price of LIT camp. Field trips will be paid for in advance, so failure to cancel by June 1, 2020 will result in a forfeit of the transportation fees for those weeks. We will be having LITs participating in Camp-A-Palooza field trips as well as LIT-only field trips.

"I just wanted to take a moment to let you both know what an incredible experience Daniel had this summer in the LIT program. He developed skills, refined others and learned a lot about himself during the 6 weeks he was an LIT. Daniel had only positive things to say about the people, the program, the choices and activities. Your approach with the teens was ideal. He felt comfortable talking with you if he had any concerns or suggestions and was sure his voice was being heard. He was part of true team and loved being a role model for the younger campers. Daniel is looking ahead and wants to complete the CIT program in the future, possibly another year of LIT too!
We want to thank you both for providing such a quality experience for young teens. There are few programs that offer everything a young teen needs and the LIT program is a gem. By combining instruction & education, opportunities for fun, spending time with peers, giving back to others and mentoring younger campers, you have created an inspiring blend. Thanks again for a wonderful summer!"
"I want to take this opportunity to thank Kids First for the Camp-a-Palooza’s LIT (Leaders In Training) and CIT (Counselors In Training) programs. My daughter participated in the two (2) years of LIT and one (1) year of CIT. When she began the programs she was quiet and not very confident in her ability to interact with others outside of her comfort zone. As a result of the team building, conflict resolution activities, imagination games, and the overall interaction with children of various age groups – her self-confidence, self-value- and self-esteem has grown and she has blossomed into a confident young lady. The interaction with the leaders and campers has shown her that through play and hard work both everyone involved learns and grows. All of these lessons are lessons that she would not have gained if not through the hard work and dedication of the staff.
THANK YOU!" ~Shari P.
"After spending my childhood summers as a camper at Camp-A-Palooza, I was so eager and excited to start my summers as an LIT at Camp-A-Palooza! I had looked up to the LITs for as long as I could remember, and once I finally got the chance to be one, it turned out to be some of my favorite and most memorable summers; they are the times I still treasure and miss to this day. Getting to spend an entire summer with my fellow LITs, who grew to be my best friends, was such a blessing and opportunity, and I still share friendship with many of them, almost five years later. From playing with the campers and interacting with counselors to just chatting with other LITs, I learned so much about being a role model, a watchful guardian, and a playful friend to the campers. Though I didn’t realize it at the time, my leadership style developed, I gained confidence in myself, and I learned how to work with others, thanks to the mentoring I received from the counselors and the opportunities I was afforded. The LIT experience is unique in that it allows for personal growth, yet is incorporated in a way that is dynamic, fun, and exciting as a young teenager.
Beyond my summers as an LIT, I found that the life skills I gained and refined transferred into many other aspects of my life, but it also set me up for my future at Camp-A-Palooza. I eventually became a CIT, and I am now in my third year as a counselor at camp. At this point, I have been involved with Camp-A-Palooza for almost ten years. I can say honestly that the day I am dreading most is when it is time to say my final goodbye to camp, because of the unique, indescribable place it is. I am so grateful for my time at Camp-A-Palooza, and my time as an LIT is no exception!"
