Thank You: No Place I'd Rather Be

September 25, 2018

Dear Camp-A-Palooza Families,

We want to thank you for another wonderful summer season at Camp-A-Palooza! This summer had many memorable moments, and we are grateful we got to share and create them with your children. Hopefully, you had a great summer as well!

Now that we have taken some time to reflect and rewind after the summer season, we are off and running with plans for the summer of 2019. We are excited to launch several new features on our website (www.kidsfirstcamp.com) including our blog, which will feature posts (like this one!) from staff, campers and others in our camp family. We will soon have up and running a camp store with items that your camper can use throughout the school year or in the build up to next summer. We hope that our new website can illuminate our philosophy and enlighten new and veteran families about what we work to accomplish through our programs.

In the coming months, be on the lookout for our monthly newsletter with new information, videos from our favorite staff, recipes and more!

We work hard to foster a community that increases children’s confidence, gives them a greater sense of independence and a happy place. We are always happy to see this kind of growth and that your children benefit from spending time with us! Growing up in a society where everything and everyone are critiqued, we (like Planet Fitness) work to make camp a judgement-free zone. We welcome each child with open hearts and open arms and try to find something they’ll like in each day. Some of the favorite activities camper mentioned to us are: dodgeball (always dodgeball!), capture the flag, basketball, the epic egg drop off a 40 foot high lift, water days, Kona Ice Fridays, color wars competitions and counselor gross-out challenges! Of course, there were so many other programs, over 300 games/activities to be exact! We are always striving to increase camper involvement in planning and leading activities. This year was our most successful yet and we look forward to further developing this model together with our campers.

Our staff often come into a job at summer expecting to play games and do lots of activities with them, but they all soon realize there’s so much more to working here. They are taught about being the best versions of themselves. They get excited about learning about each of the kids in their groups. One counselor even said this summer that they forgot what it’s like to be excited about everything! When you are around kids all summer, you realize quickly how happy they get whenever something we might see as small happens. For example, when they answer a question correctly in trivia, or make a basket or do a cartwheel. Anything that happens in life can be exciting if you make it exciting, and in our lives sometimes we need to get a little bit of happiness out of the small stuff. Thank you for reminding us what it’s like to be a kid. Thank you for allowing my staff to experience putting someone else before themselves.  Thank you for investing in them as much as your child and giving them the opportunity to grow as employees, caregivers and as people. One counselor said at the end of the summer, “Camp has been my favorite place ever since I started working there, but this summer was different. I knew I loved camp, but this summer’s time at camp was so much more meaningful. After having a difficult year at school and home, I can honestly say this summer has changed my life and made me a much happier person. These kids made me feel so important and loved and made my summer the most rewarding summer yet. Every day, I am reminded why I keep coming back to camp, and there is really no other place I would rather be.”

Thank you for another incredible summer, and we hope to see everyone again soon! There’s no really better place to be.

Best,

Megan
